NEW YORK--99 doctors and nurses have signed up to provide free flu shots to the 99% in Zuccotti Park this Sunday.

Doctors from Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), allied groups and many individual doctors and nurses have enthusiastically responded to provide free health care to the 99% at Zuccotti Park. Within 24 hours of the call for volunteers going out, close to 70 professionals signed up to give flu shots this Sunday.

Doctors and nurses have shown strong support for the movement that defends human needs against corporate greed. PNHP has worked closely with the OWS street medic team to not only provide volunteer doctors, but also to coordinate a “think tank” to improve the overall structure of medical support available. National Nurses United, the country’s largest nurses’ union, set up two medical tents at Zuccotti Park and staffs them daily with nurses.

Preceding the flu shot clinic is a speak-out at which health professionals and patients will share personal stories on why we need health care for all. The speak-out is organized by the official OWS working group, “Healthcare for the 99%.”

“We support Occupy Wall Street because economic and social inequalities make our patients sick,” says a statement on PNHP-NY Metro’s blog. It continues, “We support OWS because the private health insurance industry exemplifies the central complaint of the OWS movement: unchecked corporate greed threatens human needs.”  (Visit the blog at: )

PNHP is a national organization of 18,000 physicians, medical students, and health professionals who support single-payer national health insurance.

Doctors, nurses and patients will be available for interviews on-site. Pre- and post-event interviews are also welcome.
