I have a little experience with HA Proxy.

Varnish could also be useful
https://www.varnish-cache.org/

It's not a load-balancer, but it caches web content in memory which
takes huge amounts of load off of individual servers. The tech team
at Tumblr swears by Varnish and they have some of the highest traffic
loads on the internet. Unfortunately, Varnish and Wordpress don't
always play well together, so it might only be something that could be
used for select projects.

If there are administrators familiar with open solutions in this space (dns
round robin might just handle it) please identify yourself to the groups so
we can begin planning for this.

Thanks!
