Hi Nico, I'm a professional compressionist.
For upload to Vimeo or Youtube
a 12 minute video set to a frame size of 1280x720 set to 5000kbps
(audio and video combines) would be about 430MB. That fits Vimeo's
free service specs.
I use Telestream Episode, Apple Compressor (both 3.x and the new 4),
MPEGStreamclip, Quicktime 7 Pro. I also have some experience with
Sorenson Squeeze.
If you tell me what software you use I can give you more details but
the key in figuring out size is
DataRate x duration = size

Holy smokes, I need more sleep.  Thank you Mike.  The compressed
version is still 1.8 GB, so I would still love to find a faster
internet connection.  Maybe I should compress it more... Where do
people upload the Occupy TVNY stuff?  Their homes, I assume?

Hey, you have to compress the for online streaming, through final cut or
compressor, or a third party program.  On vimeo under the upload tab, they
have instructions on how to compress for their site.
Hope this helps,
