My name is Joan and I am part of the Occupation Communication Committee at OccupyLA. Please take the time to do the InterOccupation Communication Field Report for your occupation (also attached as a PDF), so that we may compare and contrast different occupations and pass along our findings and advice. Knowing what makes some occupations successful and others susceptible to police pressure will help us establish more sustainable camps in the long term.
Your participation is vital to the success of all occupations. Please take the time to do this and try to interview 10-15 occupiers so that we can get a range of perspectives.
Some initial findings:
Sites who reach out to their city council early do not experience as much police pressure as those who do not speak to city council. As well, some sites have become overwhelmed by the needs of the homeless in terms of medical care and food. New sites should be prepared to deal with this so that they do not drain their resources. And finally, some sites have been experiencing “imposters” claiming to be from OWS who disrupt consensus making and try to get them to make quick decisions. If someone claims to be from OWS in your camp, but disrespects the process of GA, then they are most likely not from OWS.
