I'm in California.  Surely, you've got statistics type people gathering data on the ground?  If not, get some.  You need to combat the theory that OWS are doing harm.  If you need help, let me know and I'll come to NY.

Here's my latest.

I also wrote an article recently on how extra food, etc., was going to help homeless shelters and the innovations flourishing in these think tanks were solving problems in record speed.

Check the website and get out the word that whistlewatch.org is blowing the whistle on the NY lack of quality journalism and repeated attempts to pit the people against the people.

This may be a good question for Outreach, but I will take a stab.
I would do an in person interview with small, non-chain store owners in the area.
The demographic of the Occupiers shows that it mirrors the nation's unemployment- conversely and presumably the employed Occupiers make money. They most likely need to purchase supplies and consumables to survive, perhaps even food. I suspect they purchase where its convenient, i.e., local stores.
I do know some stores/restaurants closed their doors to Occupiers, that would definitely not bring in business. There are a large number of food vendors that set up all around the park to serve Occupiers and tourists. The Occupiers have even set up policies that they would keep foot paths to the vendors through the park open for the express purpose of helping them maintain business.
But really, a tour of the area would be the most accurate means of investigating this interesting hypothesis. We would be interested to know what you do find, especially if it would mean we could further improve our relationship with the community.

I'm working on an article to combat the idea that OWS is hurting small businesses in NY.  Can anyone give me an idea of which businesses have been helped or driven up since Sept 17?
