In Austin we have a media team that tries to put together certain folks to speak but the problem is that the media shows up and interviews whoever they want.  They come out from time to time unexpectedly and do not cover GA.  They cover the middle of the day when turnout is at its lowest and interview random, or not so random people.  There isn't much of a way to stop that.  I completely agree with a central news service that reports our story in 1 location.  We could create the content and put it through GA then submit it to the website.  This would cut down on the spin.  I personally think we should march on FOX as a movement because the news is another piece of the puzzle.  We are misinformed or uninformed of so much of what is happening, its not an accident.  Of course I am speaking for myself and not Occupy Austin.

The intent would not to be to "speak for" any particular Occupation or the movement as a whole, simply to allow the individual occupations to submit stories, photos, videos, etc. to the shared service, which would make them available in one place.

It's a similar idea to the printed "Occupation News", which you may have seen, but online, more comprehensive and more regularly updated.

Separately, we are going to be working out a Media Policy for Occupy Santa Cruz, which we can share around when it's more fully-cooked. We're working on putting together a list of volunteer participants who want to be on a "speaker's list" for "structured" media opportunities in connection with Occupy Santa Cruz, and plan to offer them guidelines and media training as to what they should/shouldn't say, how to handle hostile questions, etc. We'll ask the GA to delegate the choice of speaker to the Media Group, since these things often come up on very short notice…

Do any other Occupations have any sort of a concrete media policy to share?

Here is an interview aired today on Public RAdio on the "Here and Now" show from WBUR Boston.

Starting a news service brings right away the question of individuals and/or panels that are empowered to speak for us doing interviews. It is very hard to interview a whole GA but perhaps worth trying. It seems like media relations on a wider geographic scale will be unavoidable.
