This sounds like a cool idea.  I had thought of it before.

I wonder,

How many headphones could be supplied?

What if some walk off without returning them?

What would the event be?   Since only a few could have microphones, this might work better for teach-ins... or other one-directional lectures.

Hi OWS Info!

Oliver Ryan here, former Fortune journalist and Internet entrepreneur. I've been down to Liberty Park several times, and spoke last time with Jesse Cooper Levy who suggested I email this address. In short: Some friends and I would like to host a silent debate in Liberty Park. Huh? Let me explain. The Memphis-based owner of Silent Events, a pioneer of silent dance events, is willing to lend his technology to the cause. The gear consists of hundreds of wireless headphones, which we would distribute freely among those in occupation. Normally, the headphones are used to produce "silent discos" at festivals and parties all around the country (think Bonaroo) — in which DJs play music and dancers dance with headphones, effectively dancing without making a sound. We see an ideal conversion of the technology for Liberty Park, where amplification is illegal. We could set up a live debate area, and allow the discussion, carried on in normal voices, to be "broadcast" to people listening via the wireless headphones. This would be a nice supplement to the Public Microphone, which is wonderful, but breaks down for faster paced, back and forth discussion. Our team could happily work as an extension of any working group, (Media, Open Source, Internet?), and supply all the power and gear that we require. If you're interested, please shoot me an email, and I can provide more detail and get started on planning. I'll be stopping by tonight again to research the idea.

Many thanks,
Oliver Ryan
