hello bruce,

there is an app that does largely what you describe, called Vibe for iphone/droid. it's been called a "non gay grindr" by some, but unlike grindr, though also people powered, its focus is on the communication among people who happen to be in a place and not on "who" the people are.  it already has a fair bit of content and discussion around OWS here and other occupies.

vibe doesn't show who is nearby (which would be big brotherish) but shows messages that are nearby, hence the focus on the communication rather than people.  it's anonymous by default unless people want to identify themselves and you control the broadcast distance and duration of your messages.

working groups at the atrium can use it for "silent" conversation/raising questions just within 60 wall.  people at liberty square can use it to discuss issues just within the park, particularly ones that are sensitive or they may be shy about bringing out in person.

some days ago, i saw on vibe discussion of the growing drug problem at the park and the pros and cons of setting up rehab programs versus evicting people (i don't see that thread now so presumably it made use of the expiration feature)

I had an idea the other day.
Wouldn't it be cool if we had a smartphone app very much like Blendr or Grindr, technically, but for a completely different purpose.
An app that used GPS to show a face pic of every Occupier, in order of how close they are to you. Not for dating, but rather for more effective communication and connecting.
User's profiles could include which Working Groups they are members of, other contact details, etc. ( all optional )....
The built-in text messaging would offer instant convenient communication -- even if you didn't know the person's name or number...
You could literally see who is at Liberty Square right now....  Touch their face.... and text chat to them instantly.  As well as see their  name and other info they want you to see.
Just an idea.
Thoughts?

Only Love,
Bruce
