Sorry this was so late, but it is still important for all our post staff to read.
Please let me know if there is an overload of media to be processed at 50wall. I will run it up here and get it crunching.
Here are my guidelines as far as shooting formats go- make sure you read the section about importing to FCP.
Shooting should be done in 1920x1080, at 23.98fps. If you are shooting on Panasonic P2, please use the 720pN mode. There are disagreements with the 23.98 setting, but I can offer rebuttal for all of them. 29.97 should not be our standard.
Make sure you check all camera settings before shooting! Only takes a few seconds!
Dailies should be transcoded to either 1920x1080 ProRes LT or Proxy. NOT HQ, SQ, or 4444. The default setting in FCP Log and Transfer is 4444. Make sure you check this setting before transcoding. The Canon E1 Plug-In is required for this, although almost all FCP seats already have it installed. (http://bit.ly/jQy4EK go to "drivers and software" and select "Mac OS X")
Hard disks are outrageously expensive right now due to flooding in Thailand, and will remain so for at least a year. For this reason, I recommend transcoding to ProRes Proxy. even though it will somewhat degrade the image, it's fine for our purposes IMO and will save a great deal of drive space.
A great app for prores transcodes is Magic Bullet Grinder. Its interface is very simple and free from some of the bugs which are problematic in Compressor.
