Your Thoughts!

I don't mean to discourage anyone, just want to point out that the

media have their own interests -- their circulation/viewership -- not

necessarily OWS's interest. One must approach the media gingerly and

with vigilance.

I'll make sure the fact that this is a leaderless movement will be

>

> A little caution regarding such press invitations. They often turn

out to be

> opportunities for rabid comment responses against the article. The

Post and

> the News both have used such invitations as a kind of ambush --

publishing a

> brief note followed by a tsunami of exclusively oppositional

responses.

>

> It might be useful for OWSer's to avail themselves of wider print

media than

> the OWS Journal, but anyone who takes up such an invitation should

at least

> include some mention that she or he cannot speak for the Movement

as a

> spokesperson, but is offering a personal perspective, and should

get a

> promise from the editor that that disclaimer or hedge will be

published with

> the article.

>

> I'm sure this is an innocent request, but the press can turn into

something

> of a circus even with the best of intentions.

> > Hello All,

>

> > I'm Marissa Maier, the Managing Editor of Our Town Downtown.

We are a

> > weekly newspaper that recently merged with the New York

Press. We are

> > distributed in news boxes south of 14th Street. We made a

last minute

> > decision to run a feature story package on the one-month

anniversary

> > of the occupation of Zuccutti Park.

>

> > I would love to include a 550 word, first perspective piece

on the

> > occupation from people who are heavily involved in it. The

subject, or

> > focus of the piece can be varied, and depends on your

particular area

> > of expertise. If you have a piece that fits this word count,

and would

> > like to have it printed in our paper, please send it to me as

soon as

> > you can. We will pay roughly $50 to publish the piece. Please

feel

> > free to email me if you have anymore questions.
