No, it's not a view of how the world should be - it is how it is.  Based on facts, not wishful thinking.  We just can't keep all our toys.  We're running out of fresh water, for example, we are also running out of fish and the oceans are acidifying, which is going to cause the chain of life in the sea to collapse, and that (phytoplankton) is the source of much of the oxygen we breathe.  The rest is forests, and those are in decline too.

Many catastrophes are converging.  It would be smart to prepare.  And permaculture is extremely efficient, it's just not luxurious.
