Hey Arthemio,

Just touching base again to update you as yesterday we met with Direct Action and they consented on supporting our march, which has been rescheduled for Wednesday. We could definitely use help getting the word out and having support from media (including streaming if possible). I'll be away this weekend, but I've CC'ed Katie and Josh, who will be around to follow up on any next steps.

Best,

Meir

Here are the finalized details of our action next week. Please forward widely!

Wednesday, October 26th: Get Wall Street out of Healthcare!!
Speakout and March Against the Health Insurance Industry

Time:
  • 4:00pm Open Speakout - come share your personal struggles with our healthcare system
  • 4:30pm March Against the Health Insurance Industry
March Details:
  • 4:30pm - Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield / One Liberty Plaza: located across the street from Zuccotti park, Empire is a subsidiary of WellPoint, the largest publicly-traded health insurance company. CEO Angela Braley's overall compensation is $13.1 million dollars, enough to cover 1455 New Yorkers.
  • 5:30pm - WellCare / 110 5th Ave: the for-profit company that administers Medicaid and Medicare Advantage programs in New York and other states. Currently being investigated for fraud with estimates that WellCare illegally siphoned $400 million to $600 million from state health insurance programs for the poor. (1)
  • 6pm - St Vincent's Community Hospital / 12th St & 7th Ave: closed earlier this year due to bankruptcy, St Vincent’s is a casualty of profit-driven insurers and a healthcare system that leaves 50 million Americans uninsured. There are now no hospitals on the westside below 57th st.

Meir,

This is a great news since that will give us time to better prepare for the event and we have time to support the Communication Workers march. Lets keep in touch regarding your event.

Hi Arthemio,

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, late last night we learned that This Friday (at exactly the same time our march was scheduled), Communication Workers of America will be leading a march from Zuccotti Park to Verizon Wireless on Wall Street as part of the vicious contract negotiation they are in with Verizon right now.

Thus, it's looking like we're going to support this CWA march (which has healthcare at its center) and reschedule ours for next week. We are going to try to connect with Direct Action and other working groups to make sure we choose a day that doesn't conflict.

Let's stay in touch, so we can get everything organized well in-advance on the media end of things.
