A DAY OF FAITH IN SUPPORT OF OWS: Details for this Sunday

March across Brooklyn Bridge & Multi-Faith Service in Zuccotti Park.

Hello to everyone: a reminder that this coming Sunday (October 30th, 2011) will be a day of faith in support of Occupy Wall-Street.  We encourage you to take this weekend to discuss OWS in your faith communities - it's a good conversation starter for looking at the underlying economic justice issues this movement represents.  Then, encourage a liturgical "response-in-action" by encouraging your communities to join the OWS movement in solidarity and support.  Here are two options...

FIRST - Meet up with Rev. Dr. Herbert Daughtry, and faith communities from all around NYC, to celebrate the 33rd Anniversary of the Black United Front's "March on Wall Street" (see attached flyer).  Meet up at Atlantic & Bond at 2:00p, and march with us across the Brooklyn Bridge, all the way to Wall Street and Zuccotti Park.  All are welcome to join us in this powerful march, which will illustrate the links between the current "occupy" movement and the historic struggles for civil rights and economic justice.  As of now we do not have the final march route, but once it has been finalized it will be made available upon request.

SECOND - When we arrive at Zuccotti Park, we'll be meeting up even more faith communities for a special Multi-Faith Service starting close to 4:30p (this will depend on how long the march lasts, but if we're there before 4:30p, we'll wait for congregations who are still coming).  Naturally I would love it if everyone could speak, but given the constraints of time, and our desire to create a truly representative multi-faith service, the speakers list will need to be limited.  I will email all speakers with specific instructions.  But for the rest of us, gather inside Zuccotti Park on the East (Broadway) side, facing the steps.  Our speakers will be speaking at the top of these steps (about mid-way through the block), so as your community arrives, help us form an amphitheater format around this area.  FAITH LEADERS: remember to dress in liturgical garb in order to identify yourselves.

GOING FORWARD - If you would like to help organize, host, or participate in one of these multi-faith services (usually Sundays at 3:30p in Zuccotti Park), please contact Rev. John Merz ( or Eric Jackson (

OWS OUTREACH - Currently OWS organizers are planning an "outreach weekend" where occupiers will go out in twos and threes to various communities around the city to offer volunteer work on the weekend of November 11-13.  If you or your community has a unique location/volunteer opportunity you feel might be appropriate, please contact Julien Harrison ( in the OWS outreach committee with your idea.

WINTER IS COMING - and finally, as a reminder, if you or your community is able to offer material support to OWS in Zuccotti Park this winter, either through gifts of blankets, or through physical space (industrial kitchens in high demand), or through volunteers, please contact our Support Committee leader, Juan-Carlos Ruiz (

See you Sunday,
Rev. Michael Ellick
