also... this! .... Monday, 5:00pm - Chris Williams - No Nukes! No
Fracking! - How Renewable Energy Can Power the Planet
at Liberty (formerly Zuccotti) Park
In a clear indication of just how far removed from reality the debates in
Washington have become, the meltdowns that occurred at the Fukushima-Daiichi
nuclear plant in Japan have led to calls by US politicians not for an
end to nuclear
power, but for its EXPANSION and the growth of other environmentally destructive
energy “solutions”: hydrofracking, the refining of tar sands,
mountain-top removal of coal, the expansion of off-shore drilling.
But movements against nuclear power, fracking and TRULY SUSTAINABLE
ENERGY are RE-EMERGING with renewed vitality across the world: due to
mass protest, the governments of Germany and Switzerland are closing
their nuke plants and 95% of Italians just voted to do the same!
How can we build the movement here in NYC? How realistic are wind,
solar and geothermal alternatives to power all of our energy needs?
What other changes are necessary to bring them about? Join us for a
discussion of how we can strengthen these movements and what solutions
a radical environmental movement can put forward for the ecological
crisis facing our society.
